iZotope released a free plugin this week called 'Ozone Imager' normally only available in its mixing/mastering software Ozone. The plugin functions as a stereo monitoring tool and widener and is a powerful plugin in its own right. We threw it on a track to test it out and tell you a bit about its settings.
The first thing we noticed was the three options for visual feedback: Polar Sample, Polar Level, and Lissajous. Polar sample displays dots to represent each sample being heard, dots that fall outside of the 45-degree lines on either side are out of phase. Polar level displays samples as 'rays' and we think makes it is easier to see where your sounds are sitting in the stereo field. Lissajous switches the display into a diamond, your dots will be narrow if your sound is narrow and will expand the wider you make it; also, the dots will lean to either side of the diamond depending on the panning of your sound. On the far right of the plugin you will see a phase meter which represents the average phase, anything equal to or greater than zero is in phase and anything below zero...
Neutron – Izotope’s All-In-One Mixing Plugin Izotope’s product “Neutron” is a plug-in that comes with a serious combination of tools for mixing, you can chain their Dynamic EQ, 2 Multi-band Compressors, Transient Shaper, and Exciter in any order. The Compressors can produce a clean modern sound or when in “vintage mode” will output signals like a CLA-2A tube compressor; the Exciter offers harmonic shaping with 3 XY selectors that each push the sound towards Retro/Warm/Tape/Tube; the Transient Shaper is an awesome addition to have even if you already have one, and is extremely responsive from subtle levels up to when the effect is increased. Izotope DDLY – Dynamic Delay (Free Until March 10th) Izotope is releasing there powerful delay plugin for free until March 10th. This particular delay is pretty nuts in its capabilities, designed in a way that splits two different delays between high’s and low’s, and can get really heavy and grimy, real quick. The DDLY has got a scroll bar on the left side which divides the sends of your audio between two delays, top and bottom. In both delays there are a set of five parameters, and two different modes: analog and grain. In the analog mode you can control the time of the delay, the feedback, the trash (which really gets the grime going,) a dry control and a wet control.
