We are huge believers in the power of musicianship. So, we decided to open a supplementary course that is designed especially with the modern producer in mind. This course takes a fresh approach towards teaching composition with techniques from your favorite styles. Learn to write better chords, melodies, bass lines and beats, all while developing song writing skills for the studio. The concepts covered in this course are applicable to any genre or style, and will prepare you for collaboration with other producers and musicians. Harmony for Electronic Composition is designed for students from beginner to advanced levels.
ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
This three part course is aimed at the electronic music producer who wishes to acquire an understanding of how to write more beautifully and harmoniously. Learn how to use scales as a guide to choosing notes and chords that work together. Explore inversions and voicings of chords that give your music greater depth. Study how to compose using diatonic chords. Deconstruct a song to discover how producers today use music theory, and how you can too.
Building from the first lesson, the second class expands on triad harmony by creating seventh chords. Explore more than major and minor scales as we get into the study of modes, and how to use more exotic sounding combinations of notes. Understand the similarity of certain chords when we look at relative keys. Jam on a MIDI controller using some of the new topics like pentatonic scales.
In the final lesson, we look at combining chords in clever and unexpected ways, and adding extra notes to the chords making them sound richer and more colorful. We’ll be looking at add9, add11, sus2, sus4, major and minor 9ths, minor 11, major 7#11, and others. These last tips can truly elevate your musical works to sound like the composers and producers you admire. From borrowing jazz chords, to exploring chromaticism, we’re putting everything we’ve learned together in the final class demo.
