MIDI Tricks – Scaled Clips (Free Ableton Template)

MIDI Tricks – Scaled Clips (Free Ableton Template)   The Fold button in Live’s MIDI editor can be used as a reference guide to show notes from a scale. This can help us come up with strong melodies, basslines, chords, and arpeggiators with minimal music theory knowledge. It’s simply a quick technique to make sure you’re in scale.     Which notes should I play? First create a MIDI clip. Then draw all the notes of the scale you want to play in. All of them should be placed on the same time in the grid. In the image below I drew the notes of C Minor.   If you are not sure which notes fit in each scale check out this cool CHEAT SHEET. Next, select all the notes (CMD/CNTRL+A), duplicate them (CMD/CNTRL+D) and then bring them an octave higher (Shift+Up arrow). Do the same for an octave below so you’ll end up with three …

The Endless Uses of LFOs – It’s not only for Wobbling

LFO or Low-Frequency Oscillator is one of the most used tools in the world of sound design and production. Many of the classic studio effects we can find in any DAW like Flanger, Chorus, Auto-Filter, Auto-Pan, Phaser and others have some use of an LFO. In simple terms an LFO allows us to wobble any parameter we want. Not all LFOs are created equal but there some controls that we will expect to find on most if not all units. A basic understanding of these controls can help us get the most out of the LFOs whether we use them in Synthesizers, effects or with Max for Live/Modular gear.  LFO Controls   Rate – Change the speed of the LFO can be Free (Hz) or Sync (1/4, 1/8, 1/16 etc.)  Amount/Gain – Control the amount of modulation. How pronounced is the modulation. Waveform/Shape – Change the movement type by changing …

Instant Afro – Make Clave Beats Like an Expert (Afrobeat/Reggaeton/Dancehall)

Instant Afro – Make Clave Beats Like an Expert (Afrobeat/Reggaeton/Dancehall) We can find influences of Afro-Cuban and Latin rhythms in all styles of music. The main rhythm that inspired other cultures all over the world was the clave rhythm. Interestingly enough, the African rhythms they were inspired by came back to Africa. Clave rhythms and its variation are the backbones for all these beats. Let’s first check out the main clave pattern. Scroll Down for Free Download Clave   This pattern is extremely popular in modern African pop music with artists like Maleek Berry, WizKid Burnaboy & Mr. Eazi. Maleek Berry – Love U Mr.Eazi – Supernova Dancehall From there we can start making some variations to get other styles. For example, let’s loop just the …
